Position Summary
The Department of Medicine at the University at Buffalo (UB), Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, is actively recruiting an innovative, collaborative, and student-centered educator for the position of Director of the Advanced Medicine Clerkship. This leadership role offers the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the clinical education at UB and to shape the experience of fourth-year medical students preparing for residency. The Director will lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the Advanced Medicine Clerkship to ensure alignment with institutional priorities, such as the Well Beyond Curriculum, and compliance with accreditation standards (e.g., LCME). This leadership role includes collaboration with the Office of Medical Education (OME),clerkship faculty, hospital affiliates, and key institutional committees to design meaningful clinical and didactic experiences that promote clinical excellence, professionalism, and readiness for residency. Key Responsibilities
- Lead the refinement, implementation, and oversight of the Advanced Medicine Clerkship, ensuring consistency across clinical sites and alignment with programmatic goals. Collaborate with the OME, clerkship faculty, and site directors to ensure high-quality, equitable educational experiences and clinical learning environments.
- Ensure ongoing compliance with LCME standards and institutional polices, including those related to clinical education, documentation, and student assessment.
- Ensure that all clerkship learning objectives are clearly written, measurable, and aligned with the Jacobs School's Medical Education Program Objectives (MEPOs), Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs), and curricular frameworks
- Develop, document, and oversee a standardized list of required clinical encounters and procedures that reflect the core competencies of internal medicine. Ensure that students have equitable access to these experiences across clinical sites, and that all experiences are appropriately logged, monitored, and remediated if gaps are identified.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive assessment framework that includes direct observation, clinically based assessments, standardized assessments, and narrative evaluations to support competency-based progression.
- Design and maintain a robust, integrated didactic curriculum that prepares students for complex inpatient care, clinical reasoning, and residency-level responsibilities, while applying adult learning theory and incorporating active learning strategies to maximize engagement and retention.
- Align the clerkship structure and content with new Well Beyond curricular elements, including the incorporation of curricular Pillars.
- Monitor and evaluate clerkship outcomes using feedback, performance data, and continuous quality improvement strategies.
- Ensure timely, meaningful feedback and accurate grade reporting, and contribute to the design of remediation plans for struggling learners.
- Ensure that clerkship content and objectives are accurately represented in the school-wide curricular map and aligned with MEPOs and EPAs.
- Participate in and lead faculty development programs, in collaboration with the Medical Education and Educational Research Institute (MEERI), focused on clinical teaching effectiveness, feedback, and assessment best practices.
- Foster an inclusive, supportive educational environment that reflects the diverse backgrounds and needs of our students.
- Participate in regional and national conferences and/or special interest groups to maintain knowledge of key trends in medical education.
